Amir Naderi: The Cinema of a Long-Distance Runner

Amir Naderi, one of the most remarkable Iranian filmmakers since the 1970s, is a true force of nature. A relentless visionary, Naderi approaches filmmaking with the determination and endurance of a long-distance runner, always pushing toward the finish line.

Celebrated with major retrospectives at MoMA and the Centre Pompidou, and honoured with awards at prestigious festivals like Venice, Naderi stands as a towering figure of the Iranian New Wave. His masterpieces, including Waiting(1974) and The Runner (1984), have left an indelible mark on world cinema.

An avid cinephile with an encyclopedic knowledge of global cinema, Naderi's career continued to flourish after leaving Iran in the 1980s. He successfully transitioned to filmmaking in the United States and later explored new creative horizons in Japan and Italy. His films are deeply personal, often infused with autobiographical elements and an enduring passion for cinema. "I never met my father, and my mother died when I was five years old, so I consider myself raised by cinema," Naderi once shared. His extraordinary journey has taken him from the southern provinces of Iran to Tehran, and eventually to New York, Tokyo, Rome, and beyond.

Renowned for his teaching, Naderi has conducted masterclasses around the globe. Now, he brings his expertise to London for an exclusive three-day workshop on filmmaking and his unique cinematic vision. Participants will gain a rare opportunity to explore the history of Iranian cinema under the guidance of a the man, who has collaborated with key figures like Samuel Khachikian, Kamran Shirdel, Bahram Beyzaie, Sohrab Shahid Saless, and Abbas Kiarostami.

This immersive three-day workshop will delve into Amir Naderi's art of filmmaking and his reflections on the broader history of cinema. Screenings of his classic works and more recent films will accompany the sessions.
